Susan Long :
I began drawing and painting at an early
age and have always had a deep love and respect for nature. Growing up, my
sisters and I were crazy about animals. Our house was the way station for all
things feathered and furry. A stray dog or a lost kitten was sure to find a meal
and a place to sleep at our house, and if a neighbor discovered an orphaned baby
bird it most often ended up on our doorstep. I’ve shared my life with many
wonderful dogs, cats, horses and assorted creatures that found their way into
our household. To us, these animals were more than just pets. They were an
integral part of our childhood and cherished members of the family.
After growing up in South Florida and graduating from the Art Institute of Fort
Lauderdale, I worked as an art director and account executive for advertising
agencies and in my own graphic design company in Fort Lauderdale. As an
advertising artist, I designed advertisements, brochures and logos for my
clients but continued to draw and paint whenever possible.
When my husband and I relocated to Orlando in 2001, I decided to pursue painting
full time. After working in watercolors for a while, I started using pastels.
Now, I do most of my work in pastel as it is the perfect medium for portraying
animals.
Animals are, and always have been, an important part of my life. One of the most
rewarding things about painting pet portraits is meeting people who share that
same special bond with their own beloved dogs, cats, horses and birds. I enjoy
bringing someone’s pet to life through my art and there is nothing more
satisfying than capturing the devotion and unconditional love reflected in the
eyes of these dear animal friends. |
